Thank you for taking the time to learn more about myself and my campaign for Overland Park City Council Ward 6!
A little about myself, I have been a resident of Johnson County for over 41 years spending the last 16 years as a resident of Overland Park. My wife Curstin and I have four young children who are all currently or will be attending school in the Blue Valley District. This gives me a very strong desire to ensure that our schools are constantly improving and remain the best public schools in the country. I believe a very strong school system is at the heart of a community as it brings families to our community, can be one of the greatest driver of our economy, and above all, educates our children at a level very few communities can rival.
In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family as well as coaching numerous youth sports through our outstanding Blue Valley Recreation youth sports programs. I currently coach Baseball, Basketball, and Football. I find this opportunity to work with our area youth extremely rewarding and love the time I get to spend participating and hopefully making a positive impact on our youth.
I am a graduate of Kansas State University with a dual degree in Airway Science and Aeronautical Technology. From there I earned many flight certifications and licenses which allowed to me remain at Kansas State as a Flight Instructor. I have spent over 15 years as an Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Administration here in the Kansas City Area. I currently focus on testing and developing of new technologies to advance the safety and efficiency of the national airspace system. I am also involved in the training and advancement of employees new to the career field. Both of these responsibilities have given me the ability to make a difference in the development of employees to reach their maximum potential and job satisfaction. This has been an opportunity for me to work with many different people in a results driven effort to achieve a common goal.
I have held several elected positions with the National Air Traffic Control Association both as a member of the local Executive Board and Treasurer. These elected offices operate in a manner where hard decision must be made and budgets must be balanced. Our city budget will be a critical matter addressed at a critical time during the upcoming term for city council.
I have decided to ask for your vote for Overland Park City Council Ward 6 for many reasons. To highlight a few, I have identified through interactions and observation with city staff and current Ward 6 councilmembers that the status quo is no longer effective nor a benefit to Ward 6, its residents, and the rest of Overland Park. I believe the council has adopted a mode of operation to "push Overland Park forward" as described by their own words, and at any cost. While we all have an interest in the progress of Overland Park as a city the current council has devoted all their focus on progress through land developer and investor giveaways while leaving behind the residents, basic services, and the willingness to do what is right. Much more on come on this topic!
Again, welcome and thanks again for taking the time to visit this website. Many members of the current city council vote strictly for what city staff recommends. While the opinion of staff is important it should not be the only input an effective councilmember should consider. Once the council becomes just an extension of city staff they essentially remove the need for a council all together. Unfortunately we have reached that stage with our current council. My opponent, a self described "politician" with "experience", bases his decisions on the staff recommendation and relies on experience over resident input when deciding what he thinks is best for the residents. I believe that with a results driven candidate and your input we can be successful at making Overland Park the best and most desirable place for family, business, and play!
Feel free to contact me with any current issues, concerns, or ideas for the future of Overland Park. With your input and vote in the November general election we can hit the ground running and return the ears and actions of city council to the residents we serve!
